200lb in less than 3 hrs for Gary Thorpe. The shallow half of the lake was in cracking form for the anglers in the Saturday Afternoon match. A disappointing amount of anglers had not turned up for the morning match, resulting in only the small lake being used. This had a big part to play in the afternoon match. Gary Thorpe (Ton up Baits) had drawn peg 4 and wasted no time in chatting to team mate Trevor Price who had fished the peg in the morning match for 150lb. Trevor had concentrated down the edge and had suffered with a frustrating amount of Roach in with the feeding Carp. Full of good info, Gary ran to his peg and proceeded to take just 10 Carp in the first 2 and a bit hours by fishing as advised. With sport slowing Gary was going to fall well short of the target weight - the Saturday Specials are all about attempting to breach the 400lb barrier. Gary switched to an up in the water rig (6 inches deep) 14m straight out in front of him with immediate success. Gary took a fish first put in, and second, and third....... With 2 and a half hours to go Gary turned on the style and proceeded to take 200lb in double quick time for a winning total just short of 250lb. Elsewhere the small lake was in superb form. John Lees (Oxford A4) on peg 40 fished tight against the banks for consistent sport for 5 hours and returned 223-12. John was amazed at the amount of good Roach that continued to feed amongst the Carp. More amazed was Kevin Arathoon on Peg 34 - having dropped a 10lb carp from his landing net back into the water instead of his keep net he would have finished runner up, but his 222-8 was only good enough for 3rd! Even more amazed!!!! Was R Brewer (Greenman) on Peg 37 by the fact that the scales men refused to give him 28-08 for his last weigh-in, instead the call was 28-04!! Consequently, he finished with 199-12 - just 4oz short of a net busting 200lb. In the larger lake (well larger bit of the lake! you know what I mean..?) sport was a little slower, however, with 120lb need for 9th place (Andy Johnstone, Trabucco, Peg 23) no one was complaining. (Apart from me on peg 17 with 84lb and finninshing 2nd last... If anyone wants a crap peg next week - I'll draw for them..)
