When a venue is pushing the British record week in and week out, it is hard to say it is fishing any thing other than 'Very WELL'. as such the lake is fishing very well. Paste is still the bait to be using int he margin and will remain the top bait until mid September. Expect the odd big weight very shallow on all pegs - as proven last week by Gary Acock on Peg 32. Also remember to put some luncheon meat int he bait bag as a few lumps could be the difference of a frame place or back as an also ran.

Gary Thorpe
(Ton Up Baits)
376lb 8oz Peg 13

Once again Gary Thorpe has rocked the current British Match record Rolfslake. Drawn on Peg 13, Gary fished very tight against the bank and fished his own brand of paste on the hook over loose fed 4mm and 6mm Ton Up Baits Pellets- Having tried the paste at the venue myself, I can see why Gary has had no problems in making the product a success on the market. Gary developed the paste over the last years with Team mate Trevor Price and Ton Up Baits. The best thing about the paste is it is very quick and easy to mix and can even be mixed without any problems on the bank.    I'll be keeping a few bags in my holdall for those - oops I'm gonna run out of paste days!

It did not take long for Gary to settle into a good rhythm, and only the odd fish over 8lb slowed the catch rate a little as time was taken to immediately weigh and return the fish. Incidentally, Rolf hopes to hold some matches where all fish can be retained in nets, but this depends upon a delivery of special nets to allow such large Carp to be kept without doing damage to smaller specimens and dependant on the matchmen having at 4 Nets! However, for the chance to catch a 500lb bag of fish in 5hrs... I don't see a problem.

The rules at Rolfslake center around the welfare of the Fish. The condition of the fish and the record of lost fish is remarkable. Last years spawning period witnessed the loss of just a handful of fish - a single handful. This year was the same too, with only a few lost over the whole spring period. Many other venues loose this many fish a day on a quiet weekend. I can never understand why other fisheries do not adopt the same routines? I hear of the odd one starting to dip the fish but these are few and far between.. still it their loss.

Going back to Gary's match win, Gary used his standard Red Hydro set loose in a power top 2 to aid in controlling the fish quickly. Standard elastics some times need tightening too much to achieve the same control an increased risk of bumping fish. Take a look at most of the photo's on this site and you'll see most using red hydro.

Well that's my free Red Hydro sorted for the year and I'm sure Gary will give me some more Paste for such a good plug. so I'll get on with the rest of the result s... Oh did I mention that Mick Wilkinson makes the best pellet and meat floats on the market?

Pete Coxhead
(Rolfslake)

253lb Peg 9

Fishing at 8m with Paste over 4mm Pellet feed, Pete Coxhead (Rolfslake) took an impressive return of 253lb from Peg 9 but found himself some 125lb behind the winner! Pete was not complaining with his double ton as he took runners up spot by keeping himself ahead of Robin Flower on Peg 10 who eventually hauled 211lb 12oz onto the well utilized scales.

There were double tons too for Ian Higgins and Trevor price, however, unlucky John Hague fell short with 188lb from Peg 38. John makes the weekly migration from the west midlands each weekend and seems to be adding 20-40lb to his weight each week.. good to see someone getting something back for the effort put it. Well done John.

Highlight of the Day.

Russell Alexander landed a mid-double fish and witnessed it go straight out of his landing net through a massive hole, the fish went under the platform and back out. Russell quickly treaded the pole top through the leg and skillfully played the fish to the weighting landing net. Unfortunately, the fish yet again was pleased to find the hole and made a better escape this time by pulling the confused hook free. Rolf promised not to tell anyone so if you read this story - you must promise not to tell anyone else...
