August Festival
27th - 29th August 2005
Day 1 In one of the hardest August matches anyone could remember at Rolfslake in years, GOT Baits matchman Kevin Arathoon couldn't understand why everyone else was struggling for bites. Kevin, drawn on Peg 19, found fish from the off and continued to take fish for the full 5 hours. Fishing to a bar at 7m Kevin fished both bunches of Red Maggot and Paste on the hook to take fish well into double figures. Kev reported that he had to drag his bait of the edge of the bar at 7m and the fish took the rolling bait with confidence and it fell into deeper water; a tactic that can be deadly at the Oxfordshire venue, especially on the paste.
A rare bent pole on Day 1 At the draw there had been some debate over Peg 15 and a few others being in A section (the best pegs) - the other peg causing concern was Peg 13 - However, it was decided to leave all the pegs as was and I proceeded to draw Peg 15! With my chin on the floor I drudged round to the Peg and went about thinking that my festival was already over - this attitude was to cost me a few points. In short I ended up filling it in at 14m and snagging the odd fish up in the water for 50lb and middle of the section; a result I would have settled for 5 hours previously.
Despite a lack of fish a quick smile from Peg 2 Without doubt, Kevin was the star of the show today, but on the Motorway bank one of the favorites for the festival, Gary Thorpe, had put in a top draw performance. The GOT Baits backed angler had fished shallow for the full 5 hours and had taken a fine section win with 115lb from Peg 26 in B section. For those that don't know Gary, he is a larger than life character and also one of the most positive anglers your ever likely to meet - he's also dead ugly and has a pop belly! Winner of C section was Pete Coxhead (Rolfslake), winner of the Easter Festival and also tipped to win the Summer event. Pete had put together a fine 76lb 8oz on soft paste from the pegs judged to be the worst section. Pete used a paste that he described as 'dripping' to get a bite.
Chop & Caster the Key for Andy Buckley at Peg 8 Russell Alexander continued his good form with a good weight from 36 and good points and the surprise of the day was the 144lb taken by Andy Buckley in A section taken on Chopped Worm and Caster with a mixed net of mostly Chub and Carp. Again, the biggest shock of the day was how hard the match had fished. Despite plenty of fish blowing over any loose fed pellet, bites were almost impossible to temp.
Russell Alexander takes time to ship back another Carp. |
