With the weather getting cooler and light rain being forecast for the day ,it was probably the end of the fair weather that the anglers had experienced in the mid-week opens. Today also saw the return of Phil Powell after his blow out in last Saturdays open ,and he hoped for a better draw and days fishing. The match today was going to be pegged on the motorway bank as there were10 visiting anglers on the carpark bank so most anglers wanted pegs 4,8,9,16 or 18 as they had shown good form recently.
After again arriving late due to work commitments ,i had peg 10 drawn for me which is a peg that has not been used for a long while ,and one that i had not fished for at least 4 years, so i was not looking forward to a tough 5 hours.
In first place today was Rolfslake / Walker Floats sponsored angler John Bennett who has had some greats draws recently, and today was fishing his most favourite peg on the lake, peg 6 {apart from pegs 23,32, 4,9,and 15}. John today was fishing a short line at a range of 5 mtrs and straight out in front, and was using his favourite bait at the moment corn, which he fishes by moving the bait constantly to draws bites. John caught throughout the five hours catching fish to double figures in his weight of 276-12 and a deserved win.

In second place and a return to form was Phil Powell ,who was fishing lake record peg 8 and fished at a range of 16 mtrs against the grass on the far bank. Phil used a combination of pellet ,corn and maggots fished at full depth to assemble his weight of 220-00, which consisted of 4 chub for 23lb {that have to be weighed individually}, and a further 30lb of smaller chub to 3lb. These fish are most difficult to catch and only live in peg 8 so to catch 50lb+ is a great feat. Completing the frame today was myself {ETG} who fished the margins to the left at a range of 10 mtrs and a line straight out in front ,at a range of 6 mtrs. After a very slow 2 hours catching only 2 fish in the margins ,i decided to go for broke and fish Yorkshire Bait Company's Kopy Kat paste for the remaining 3 hours which transformed the peg and helped me to my weight of 146-12. I was really pleased with this weight as paste is usually ineffective after mid September, but this paste mixes great and smells really fishery giving me confidence that fish will come to it ,and that not many other people will consider paste as a winning bait.
The small lake is fishing very well at the moment ,with pegs 4,6,7,8, all capable of winning a match with pegs 9,16 and 18 in the big lake the only pegs in with a chance. Corn is the most consistent bait at the moment, but you will have to keep moving the bait to entice bites. More big fish {fish to 18lb} are showing in weights as they pack weight on for the winter so be prepared.
