Rolfs' Diary 2007
Easter Friday - Total Fishing With a noticeable improvement in the recent weather conditions, the anglers fishing the Total-Fishing - Rolfslake Easter Friday Special were hoping for a decent days fishing and a good match to boot.
Match Organiser - Andy Toplis . With the Carp starting to come onto the pellet as the waters warmed in the Spring sunshine that dominated the end of the Week and the start of the Easter Period, the backing weights didn't dominate the after match talk but there were more bites on offer on most pegs as the venue continues to improve after a hard winters fishing. Andy May and Jon Arthur drew pegs 23 & 24 respectively, and with the pegs recently dominating the frame, a good match was promised for the two matchmen. A light northern breeze threatening to put the fish down, however a warming sun kept some fish patrolling the bar that dominates that noted Hot Spot around the in form pegs. Andy opted to feed caster and fish sweetcorn on the hook presented on a medium-shallow waggler fished at about 18m on Peg 23. Jon Arthur also opted for similar tactics with his choice of loose feed being pellet. Both matchmen set about putting together decent weights with fish to double figures. It was hard going elsewhere, with the exception of Derek Wellan on Peg 7, and it looked like being a two horse race to the final whistle. Derek's return of 173lb+ from peg 7 was head and shoulders above those around him and was more deserving than the 3rd place it finally took. Derek also fished a waggler over pellet but chose to temp the fish with a multi-maggot hookbait. At the scales, Andy May took the honors over Jon Arthur and one could argue that the slowing sinking caster gave Andy the edge in an up-in-the-water attack. The match was witness to the first multiple double ton return this spring and reflected the carp switching on to traditional baits such as pellet and sweetcorn. The rest of the returns were much less spectacular, these will improve as the fish settle down with the weather and after the annual spawning periods.
