Rolfs' Diary 2008

Saturday Open Match

26 April 2008

Match Reporter Eddy Taylor Green

Well I said it would not be long before someone broke the 300-00 barrier and we are still in April. With this being one of the last available weekend opens until October, it brought out some of the top gun anglers to try and get a big weight that Rolfslake is famous for.

Continuing his very good form at the lake was Hydro 2000 sponsored angler Dave Wightman, who was today drawn on small lake peg 4. Dave started on the long pole at a range of 13mtrs fishing meat on the deck ,but as the day progressed Dave was able to bring the fish towards him and eventually caught at 4 mtrs for his weight of 320-04 and a very deserved win.

In second place was the very popular John Hagues who was fishing in-form peg 8 and who enjoyed another good day fishing the bush to his left and the long line at 16mtrs. John caught most of his fish on the long line against the grasses, fishing meat and pellet hookbaits, spraying pellet over and catching fish to 12lb in his final weight of 240-00.

The thing that makes this peg so good is that the far bank is undercut by at least 3ft, and the fish love to be there, there are some big carp to 20-00 and some massive chub to 8-00 just waiting to be caught ,but it can be hard work if it is windy.

Completing the frame was lake regular Mick Lane who today left his trademark shallow rigs to one side ,and who fished the margins using a combination of corn, pellet and meat hookbaits feeding very heavy to catch his weight of 133-00.

Expect weights to increase as the weather warms up and the fish start to spread all around the lake. Fish are starting to get caught on paste, so it will not be long before the fish come close enough to make this a winning method.

Please phone John to book your place on these opens.
