Match Winning Rigs

Peter Coxhead

Peter is no stranger to winning at Rolfslake.
The key to his success is based upon keeping everything simple without over complicating the important bits - such as feeding and rigs.

Many of Peter's winning weights have been whilst exploiting the Rolfslake Carp love for soft paste. Peter prefers to attack his peg on the first inside ledge, again exploiting any feature he may have on this line. The paste works best from late June to October - e.g. when it's warm! Peter is well known for being a very positive angler and will feed whatever is required to get the get the Carp to settle. In extreme situations in spring Pete has fed in excess of 15pts on the Long Pole to ensure he held the fish. Not many negative anglers even carry that amount of pellet.

As a regular matchman at the lake, Peter will back his ability to better those weights around him for a match win and didn't hesitate to share his rigs with us at Rolfslake.co.uk. Armed with these basic rigs you will soon be putting 200lb plus weights onto the scales.

Paste Pole Rig - Match Fishing

Summer Paste
Down the Edge.

"I use a self cocking float about 4x10 and prefer Preston Tyson's. The weighted ones are by far the best but I'm not sure they still make them.  I never put any shot on the line and will prefer either 0.19 or 0.21 to size 12 Kamasan 911 and use a soft paste that will break down very quickly. I use the paste to set the float correctly and when the paste has broken down the float will pop up. A lot of bites will react in the same way, so it's best to strike just in case. You'll avoid line bites and foul hooked fish as you have no weight down the line - SIMPLE"

Long Line
On the Deck .

"My long line rigs consist of preston tyson no3 0.35g used with 0.19 and have a bulk off no8's about 1 foot from the hook which is a size 16-12 kamasan 911. Again, I will use the weight of the bait to set the float so there is about 5mm showing, simple."

Baits

Best baits - I use punched meat or soft pellets, I personally don't like banded pellets. Normally, I would start on Meat or Firm hooker pellets to combat the shoals of Roach. Don't strike just lift gently, I feed a lot normally, (Slight Understatement - Lloyd) when they back off start mixing in soft expander pellet and use soft on the hook- you'll get more finicky fish towards the end of a match "

Pole Rig - Fishing
Bottom Rig.
Long Line
Shallow Rig.

"Up in the water I use a small float (0.10g) with a thick bristle. Not a dibber, you can see all the bites much better as a many of the Carp bites at Rolfslake are only little knocks that you think are roach. I now use a size 16 hook or 14 Kamasan 911 either no weight on the line of all weight under float so it cocks quickly.
